I have a bunch of canvas boards that I used for my painting class this year. I decided to put gesso over them all then paint something new on top because all of the original paintings sucked and I felt bad thinking about throwing those expensive canvas boards away. I made a goal to re-use all of my canvas boards before school starts up again in order to work on my acrylic painting skills.

This is by far my best acrylic piece to date. I'm improving!!!

EDIT MAY 14, 2008: I replaced the photo of the painting with a scanned image. It's a really patchy job because I had to scan it in 4 sections and I don't know how to get rid of the lines, but it shows a lot more of the details and the overall colour of the piece is more accurate to the original.

sweet, ok so open all the pieces in photoshop. Then create a new doc to the size you want the final image. Drag all four pieces onto the new doc from top left scan clockwise to the bottom right (just to make it easier in the next step). you now have 4 layers plus the background layer. Arrange them so that they line up as closely as possible to where you want them. Now with your top layer highlighted go to the bottom of the layers window and you will see a little rectangle with a circle in it. This is the layer mask button. Click on this. You will now have a layer mask on your top layer. With this layer still highlighted get your eraser tool set on white and at about 60% opacity and erase down the line. if you go to far over you can 'erase' this by switching the swatch to the other side ie black.

This is what you do if its an A3 piece. if its larger you then repeat the process with the next layer. so basically, you work around the layers in the order you dragged them on putting a layer mask on the top 3 of the 4 layers.

because sometimes your scans may come out as slightly different colours, you may have to use the clone tool a bit on the edges too to clean that up. ie looks like a stamp.. alt or apple click on the area you want cloned then move to the area you want to add to and paint.

Flatten image and play around with levels, colour balance etc

NOTE: your scans DO need to overlap slighly for this to work.
